We inventory an extensive stock of finished and semi-finished components so we are independent of our raw material suppliers. These components can be customized to your requirements in our full line machine shop. Special design examples are long slip, high angle, fast speed, torque limiting and offset universal joints.

There are many joint innovations that are available for assemblies. Some include lubed for life, special composite tubing and unique coatings to protect drive shafts in hazardous environments.

 Companion Flange

A companion flange, sometimes referred to as a hub, allows connection of a flange yoke to another type of connection, for proper torque transfer. The flange yoke is bolted with either through holes or threaded holes to the appropriate companion flange, which has some other form of connection, primarily bore and key or splined input shaft.

At KEM we stock a complete line of standard size companion flanges with rough bore that we machine to fit your splined & keyed shafts. We have the capability to bore and key from DIN 58mm to 390mm, and from SAE 1310 to 1950 series, as well as spline bores and cross-serrate flange faces to fit your particular application. We also have machining capabilities that allow us to do special order jobs on material up to 750mm.

Tube Yoke (Weld Yoke)

 Tube Yoke

A tube yoke, commonly referred to as a “weld yoke”, is a simple but critical component of any drive shaft. The technical definition of a tube yoke is a yoke with a piloting hub for attachment of a tube. The tube yoke is typically pressed onto the tube, along with the tube shaft, in one process. Over-pressing is a common mistake that can be made when the tube is pressed too far over the hub of the tube yoke.
Once the tube yoke (weld yoke) and the tube are pressed together.  The weld seam appears, which is important to inspect for pin holes, along with undercutting and other improper welding techniques. If a tube yoke is not welded properly, a shear point is created.

Proper Alignment Between Tube Yoke & Slip Yoke

Proper phasing/alignment of the tube yoke (weld yoke) is an additional aspect to consider when assembling a drive shaft. If a tube yoke is not properly phased/aligned with the slip yoke, there can be a variety of vibrational problems that can occur because the u-joints will not be rotating properly with one another.

Tube Shaft (Stub)

 Tube Shaft
A tube shaft is a drive shaft component that is used with a slip yoke, which in turn allows for axial movement. Most tube shafts  have blue colored splines.

That  color is often referred to as glidecoat, which is a nylon coating that is used to prevent premature wear of the part.
There are a few interchangeable terms for tube shafts: “stub shafts”, “slip stubs”, and “stubs”. All of these terms are used throughout the industry to help identify the large array of tube shafts available on the market. They come in an assortment of dimensions to compensate for the different strengths needed in the infinite amount of applications that they are used in.

Proper Maintenance for Tube Shafts
During the assembly or inspection of a drive shaft, there should be special attention paid to the space between the tube shaft (stub shaft) and the tube. That space is where the weld seam is and it should be closely inspected for pin holes, undercutting and other improper welding techniques. If the weld is defective, a shear point is created and the chance of a failure is greatly increased.
